Where is the Unity Government?

The first round of presidential election the parties were unified and they formed a unity government to challenge the Maumoon era. We have seen weeks of the unanimity but the unified government became frenzy when the activists demanded their portions from the established government. Then there came a time, Mr Gasim Ibrahim who faced with Nasheed's critisism forcing him to resign from the post within few weeks of his service to the unified cabinet.

After the demands of the activists, a trend has begun to give high level posts to the November 1998 terror plot group. Consequently, people who love their nation, they demanded to fire these terrorists. The outcry of the public, President Nasheed was forced to declare his view on this terror issue. However, his argument was preposterous and he believed that they are innocent citizens who completed their requisite terms in imprisonment as like the rest of the public. After protests and individual letters one of the terrorist was given demotion but awarded high level posts to the rest of the terrorists as before he entered into his new home The Theemuge. Also, thugs and criminals were released into the society without charges by ignoring the concerned public.

Then, he came up a great plan by giving high level posts to his followers (activists) and started firing the government employees without any rational objectives. Critics believe that there were hundreds of innocent victims who fall into this trap without knowing that they were trapped under Gayyoom’s regime. According to one of the victim, he was working in the government agency (Post Office) as a normal staff but he saw his resignation letter after he returned from a meeting.

Nasheed’s next confrontation was the national intellectuals. The so called president came up a solution to bring equity into the government’s remuneration package. Lately, people came to know that their salaries have become a century joke. Their long term study commitment and the experience have been contrasted against the unqualified squad in the government. One of the government staff condemned the unfairness involved in the remuneration package. He argued that his junior gets the same figure as him without any academic qualification. What an illogical prejudiced remuneration package?

On the 100 day anniversary of the government's accession to power, we heard Dr Hassan Saeed became the victim of their snobbery criticisms. Nasheed blows a horn in the MDP annual assembly on 30th January 2009. He said that the graduates from Salafiyyaa would not understand political principles and the black magic they studied will not be a recipe to understand the Maldivians. The school he mentioned was the place where Dr Saeed was studied while he was in Pakistan. This is a man who supported the MDP candidate unconditionally during the second round of election. But Nasheed has taken his advice as provocative criticisms as if he was a clumsy activist.

His resignation comes a month after he slated the current regime for appointing too many activists and not enough intellectual to government posts. This is exactly what Maumoon did when he first came into power where the intellectuals were been decades of isolations.

After Hassan’s resignations the government is currently running for the interest of the 25 per cent of MDP activists. Where is the unity government? What change is going to come next? This is not the change we can believe in.
