The Capacity of the President and Local Media of Maldives

At present, Mr Nasheed has been in the presidential chair for now nearly ten months. We have been following the local media and other means to comprehend his integrity of his term in the office. Unfortunately, there has not been a single constructive criticism made within the local media yet. The Television of Maldives (TVM) is seems to be like the same old institution where it hides the reality of everything and put out nothing apart from the regime propagandas. The local and the pro-government papers seem to be the finger-puppets of this regime. The means of the media convey the day-to-day governance of this administration without any qualitative analysis.

However, the real stories are out there but the media seems to be secluding every hidden agenda of this regime. The attitude of this regime is nowhere near or better off than the previous regime. People have been living with the same old politics for decades while some are getting weary of the change they brought in. For instance, you can recall Khaleelbe (Hoarafushee Khaleel) who is the mouthpiece of Mr Gayyoom and spread the prominence and concealed the flows of his regime. The public can recall interviews he had with Haveeru and TVM Heyanbo programmes. One of this interviews, he said Mr Gayyoom was his teacher and he was graduated from Mr Gayoom’s University which no one ever heard of. Of course, this was a customary and in their fantasy world to plead with the greatness of the leader. Indeed, we can see a complete different stance and his position towards these regimes now and then. This kind of corruptive transformations resulted to lose the credibility of the local media and its phony journalists.

The belligerent local media aids to promote regimes covert plans. The President Nasheed is taking this advantage and nowadays he is the champion for these media outlets. With our convert operations we came to know that this regime is threatening to the media whoever who’s not onboard with the regime. This is why this regime is so much in love with the media and spread their day-to-day propaganda without any threat of constructive criticisms. Also, the civil servants are facing the same dilemma from this regime. We have been told to be quite or onboard with the regime or else face forceful resignations.

The wise people think that this is not the change that they longed for at the first place. Some people think if they have a second chance to vote they wouldn’t mind to vote for Mr Gayyoom. It is quite obvious that there is many reasons people change their perceptions towards the current regime. The president’s cabinet, state ministers and other appointees are one paradigm people lose their faith on this regime. Indeed, the very fact is that the campaign promises MDP made during the presidential election. So far nothing has been done to fulfil these promises. This is where the media is lacking and it tries to ease the real stories with other redundant news bulletins.

The wise political analysts believe that the regime has no ground to fulfil their promises. The regime came to power without knowing anything about of good governance. These are the very people who have been labelled as activists without proper experience in managing a government and its financial capacity. The current regime laid out their manifesto without a proper financial plan and any strategic guidance from the experienced. The manifesto was laid out by filling a questionnaire from the fish market as if it was a graduate’s research methodological paper. Out of the blue they came into power but when they sat foot in the real chairs of the government, the activists came to realize that nothing comes that easy when it comes to administer and financial aptitude of a government.

They came to know that there is no easy way to find money to govern a nation. They came to know that the strategic importance of foreign aid is not to build nationwide transport network. They came to know that the tourism dollar is not enough to build flats and to invest in other socioeconomic activities in the country. They came to know that the global financial market fluctuations always discriminately brutal to its core fiscal policies. They came to realize that the foreign investors are not that interest into the other sectors of the market apart from tourism. The regime came to realize that money is hard to find whilst resort is just only the avenue that they can rely on to funds their unrealistic manifesto.

Since then, Mr Nasheed bargains with the media to divert the real stories and gave other needless excuses to convince his voters. Now he is using his last remedy to manipulate the public by focusing on Mr Gayyoom. Although, he has forgotten that there is a huge crowd (public) behind Mr Gayyoom for any of his offensive against him. The fact to the matter is that he has got fewer supporters than Mr Gayyoom and at the same time he forgets the coalition was the one bringing him into the presidential chair. Besides, he forgets there is no coalition behind him to back him up in the next election. His back up is Dr Waheed but the truth to the matter is he never had any public nor prominent party crowd to back him up for any public stance! Mr President wakes up before your term is over!
